About Us

We are at the forefront of Spreading Peace

Inter-Regional Peace Network is a duly registered non-political, non-religious and non-governmental organization formed to sustain and enhance peace by addressing violent extremism, political inter-ethnic conflicts and drug and alcohol abuse among youth in Kenya . IRPN was founded in 2014 to complement the efforts of the government in ensuring peace and tranquillity. IRPN has taken initiative to create awareness across the country by creating awareness among communities on the importance of co-existing peacefully.

In the recent years, Kenya has experienced several cases of violence especially during the electioneering period. In 2007/2008, 1,300 people died during the post-election violence with thousands of families being displaced and property worth billions of shillings lost. The youth have been used to perpetuate ethnic and political violence in most cases. They have also been used to perpetuate violent extremism by local and international terrorist groups. To end the cycle of violence during the electioneering period and empower the youth, IRPN was founded in 2014 to complement the efforts of the government in ensuring peace and tranquillity.

Our Achievements

In ensuring that Kenya does not go back to another post-election violence, we played a significant role through sustained campaigns before, during and after the 2017 election. Through a campaign dubbed " BEYOND TRIBE, ONE NATION" we trained over three thousand (3,000) youths as integrated community peace ambassadors, majorly university students and slum dwellers. The universities include Moi University Main campus (Uasin Gishu County) Kenyatta University Main campus (Kiambu county), Maseno University (Kisumu County) Technical University (Mombasa County). The slums that we widely covered include Kibra, Dandora and Soweto in Nairobi. This particular campaign was successfully launched at a breakfast meeting that brought together different stakeholders and protagonists in that election among the former prime minister Hon. Raila Odinga, civil society leaders, religious leaders, business leaders, the media and government officials. As part of the counter-violent extremism campaign, we’ve run a campaign targeting the youth in universities, secondary and primary schools as well as youth settling in the informal settlements that in the recent past have become the target for recruitment by violent extremist groups such as Alshabaab, ISIS and others. We' ve also run a sustained media campaign, and held forums and workshops, calling for good governance and electoral justice. As civic education providers and election observation groups, accredited by the independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), we fielded over five hundred election monitors across the country and reached out to over ten counties with the message of peace ahead of the elections.

Our Story of Success

Our story of success begins with the national launch of the Beyond Tribe, One Nation campaign. This campaign was launched on 6th October 2016 at a time when there was a lot of war of words between the government and the opposition leaders as the elections drew closer. It is in this meeting at Serena hotel Nairobi, attended by over two hundred participants that brought together the political bigwigs and other electoral stakeholders including the government and the opposition leaders led by the former Prime Minister Hon. Raila Odinga, the media, the civil society, heads of independent constitutional commissions, the electoral body representatives and the religious community. This meeting culminated in a peace declaration with the leaders pledging to uphold electoral values and conduct peaceful campaigns. It was a day after our beyond tribe, one nation campaign at Moi University’s main campus that our hearts were moved and touched greatly by a student who had participated in the forum and decided to write to us explaining how his life had been touched by the forum. The student who comes from a violent Nandi and Kisumu county borders narrated to us how he had seen the members of the two communities (Luos and Kalenjins) butcher each other in the fight over communal land. For many years the government has tried to end the perennial conflict without success. He also told us of how he had seen his relatives butchered by the cattle rustlers from the Nandi community who often raided their village at night. However, after attending the conference, he made a resolution to go back to the community and champion peace, eager to see a permanent end to the conflict.
